Scope of Responsibility

The Diabetic Care Specialist will also provide education on a wide variety of topics with an emphasis on diabetes education. The educator systematically and continuously collects and assesses data related to patient health status to develop, implement and evaluate plan of care. This position utilizes evidence-based practice. Has the responsibility for overseeing the day-to day operations of the DSMES program. Follows the ADCES Diabetes Education Accreditation requirements, which are based on the National Standards of Diabetes Self-Management and Support Guidelines. Responsible to Supervising Physician.

Education

    • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in health-related field
    • Required licenses, registrations for areas of specialty

Training and Experience

    • Has two years of professional practice experience in their discipline and minimum 6 months experience providing diabetes education (they should get this in during the training and transition into the role).
    • Complete 15 hours of diabetes-related continuing education within the past 2 years.
    • Recent teaching experience preferred
    • Attains and maintains American Heart Association Health Care Provider Status
    • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) credential preferred/eligible. If not already CDCES will sit for the certification examination within 24 months of hire date.
    • Certification as an insulin pump trainer on various insulin pumps or if not certified obtains certification within 12 months.
